Selous / Nyerere

A remarkable Tanzania destination, best experienced with local knowledge.

Overview

Renamed Nyerere National Park in its northern section (still widely known by its historic name, Selous), this is one of the largest protected wilderness areas in Africa โ€” bigger than Switzerland, and far less visited than the northern circuit. The Rufiji River and its lakes give the reserve a character no other Tanzanian park has: boat safaris alongside game drives, with hippo, crocodile and elephant often seen from the water. Walking safaris are common here too, putting you on foot in genuine wilderness with an experienced armed guide.
