Overview
Lake Natron is one of Tanzania’s most striking, least-visited landscapes โ a shallow soda lake so caustic that few animals can tolerate it, which is exactly why it’s East Africa’s most important breeding ground for lesser flamingos. The lake’s alkaline chemistry turns stretches of water deep red and orange, especially in the dry season. Looming above it is Ol Doinyo Lengai, Maasai for “Mountain of God”, the only active volcano in the world that erupts natrocarbonatite lava โ cool enough, relatively, to be climbed by experienced trekkers.
