Lake Manyara National Park

A remarkable Tanzania destination, best experienced with local knowledge.

Overview

Compact but strikingly varied, Lake Manyara National Park sits at the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment, with two-thirds of its area covered by the alkaline lake itself. The park is best known for its tree-climbing lions โ€” an unusual behaviour rarely seen elsewhere โ€” and for the flocks of flamingo and other waterbirds that gather on the lake when water levels are right. A dense groundwater forest near the entrance gives way to open grassland and the lakeshore, all within a short game drive.
