Wildebeest Migration Safari

The Great Wildebeest Migration is the largest overland movement of animals on earth — approximately 1.5 million wildebeest, accompanied by hundreds of thousands of zebra and gazelle, completing a continuous annual circuit between the Serengeti in Tanzania and the Masai Mara in Kenya in search of fresh grazing. No wildlife experience in Africa — and arguably in the world — matches the sheer scale and primal drama of witnessing this movement in person. The river crossings at the Grumeti and Mara rivers, where the herds must plunge into crocodile-filled waters to continue their journey, are among the most intense wildlife spectacles on the planet.

Timing and positioning are everything with the migration. The herds are in the southern Serengeti and Ngorongoro area from December through March, calving season, when thousands of wildebeest calves are born daily and predator activity is at its peak. They move north through the central Serengeti between April and June, reaching the Grumeti River crossings in June and July. The famous Mara River crossings happen between July and October in the northern Serengeti near the Kenyan border. A knowledgeable guide and a well-positioned camp are essential — the migration covers thousands of square kilometres and finding the herds requires current intelligence, experience, and patience.
