The daily schedule

On arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) or Arusha Airport (ARK) which caters for domestic flights, you will be met by an African Big Cats Safaris representative who will drive you to your accommodation in Arusha. Your overnight stay will be at the Mount Meru Hotel where the rhythm of nature pounds to the beat of an African drum, and where life is all about a revival of the senses.

Breakfast will be served at the lodge and thereafter we will depart to Tarangire National Park. The park is named after the Tarangire River which runs through it. This ‘river of warthogs’ is the only source of water for wildlife in the region during the dry season. In places, the vegetation is quite dense, including elephant grass, acacia woodlands and lush groundwater forest. The park is well known for its elephant families, which can often be seen congregating by the river. You may also see giraffe, bushbuck and hartebeest. These animals are closely followed by a range of predators, including lions and leopards. There are more breeding species of birds found in Tarangire National Park than anywhere else on the planet! After a packed lunch and an extensive game drive, we’ll head for our accommodation at Kitela Lodge in the Ngorongoro Highlands.

After an early breakfast, drive to Ngorongoro Conservation Area, descending into the Ngorongoro Crater for a game viewing drive. This is a good opportunity to spot the endangered black rhino and a big population of lions, wildebeests, zebras, etc. The jewel in Ngorongoro’s crown is a deep, volcanic crater, the largest unflooded and unbroken caldera in the world. It is a UNESCO world heritage site and one of the 8th wonders of the world. The Ngorongoro Crater is one of Africa’s most famous sites and is said to have the highest density of wildlife in Africa. The Crater has achieved world renown status, attracting an ever-increasing number of visitors each year. You are unlikely to escape other vehicles here, but you are guaranteed great wildlife viewing in a genuinely mind-blowing environment. There is nowhere else in Africa quite like Ngorongoro! Late in the afternoon, continue with a short drive to your accommodation for dinner and your overnight stay at Kitela Lodge.

Have an early breakfast and drive to Lake Manyara National Park for a game viewing drive. Your first encounter will probably be spotting large troupes of baboons. Lake Manyara National Park is worth a stop in its own right. Its groundwater forests, bush plains, baobab strewn cliffs, and algae-streaked hot springs offer incredible ecological variety in a small area, rich in wildlife and incredible numbers of birds. The alkaline soda of Lake Manyara is home to an incredible array of birdlife that thrives on its brackish waters. Pink flamingo stoops and graze by the thousands of colorful specks against the grey minerals of the lakeshore. Lake Manyara is surely a bird watchers paradise with over 400 species of birds recorded. The park is also famous for the tree-climbing lions which can be spotted relaxing on tree branches. After lunch, you’ll drive back to Arusha marking the end of your epic safari and in time for your flight back home or to Zanzibar.
