The daily schedule

Your journey begins at the Marangu Gate (1,860m) after completing park registrations. The trail winds through a lush, vibrant tropical rainforest where the air is thick with humidity and the sound of exotic birds. You’ll likely spot blue monkeys or black-and-white colobus monkeys swinging through the ancient trees draped in moss. The incline is gentle and steady, allowing your body to begin adjusting to the exertion. After a few hours of hiking, you arrive at the Mandara Huts, a collection of wooden A-frame buildings nestled in a forest clearing. If you have any extra energy, a short 15-minute walk to Mundi Crater offers your first real view of the Kenyan plains below.

As you leave the forest, the canopy thins out into the heath and moorland zone. The landscape shifts dramatically to low-lying shrubs, giant lobelias, and surreal groundsels that look like something out of a sci-fi novel. The path becomes more exposed, offering wide-open views of the jagged Mawenzi Peak ahead and the towering Kibo dome. This is a long day of walking, but the gradual gain in altitude is key for acclimatization. You’ll feel the air getting thinner and cooler as you reach the Horombo Huts. This village-like camp is often bustling with hikers both ascending and descending, making it a great spot to swap stories with fellow adventurers before a chilly mountain night.

Today, the terrain turns into a stark, high-altitude “Alpine Desert.” You’ll cross the Saddle, a broad, barren plateau that connects the peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo. There is very little vegetation here, and the wind can be biting, so layering up is essential. The walk is relatively flat for a long stretch, but the thinning oxygen makes every step feel heavier. As you approach Kibo Hut, the landscape becomes a landscape of rock and dust. Kibo Hut is a stone structure located at the base of the summit cone. You will arrive in the early afternoon, eat an early dinner, and try to sleep immediately, as your final summit push begins around midnight.

This is the “Big Day.” You’ll be woken up at midnight with tea and biscuits before heading out into the freezing darkness. The climb up the volcanic scree to Gilman’s Point (5,685m) is the steepest and most mentally taxing part of the trek. From there, it’s a two-hour trek along the crater rim, passing massive glaciers, to reach Uhuru Peak—the Roof of Africa. Watching the sunrise over the clouds is a spiritual experience. After a brief celebration and photos, you begin a long, knee-jarring descent back to Kibo Hut for a quick rest and brunch, then continue all the way down to Horombo Hut. Though exhausted, the thick air at Horombo will feel like a luxury.

The final day is a celebratory descent. Your legs will likely feel like lead, but the increasing oxygen levels provide a natural “high.” You’ll re-enter the lush rainforest, enjoying the warmth and the vibrant green scenery that you missed in the misty darkness of Day 1. Once you reach the Marangu Gate, you’ll sign out of the national park registry. This is where successful climbers receive their certificates—green for Gilman’s Point and gold for Uhuru Peak. It’s a time to tip your guides and porters, who have been your lifeline on the mountain, before being driven back to your hotel for a very well-deserved hot shower and a soft bed.
