The Whiskey Route

The Machame Route is the most popular route on Kilimanjaro today and, for many experienced operators and guides, the route they most frequently recommend to first-time climbers seeking the best balance of scenery, acclimatisation profile, and summit success rate. Its nickname — the Whiskey Route, in pointed contrast to the Coca-Cola Route of Marangu — reflects its reputation for being more challenging and more serious than its older neighbour, though the difference in technical difficulty is less significant than the difference in scenery and acclimatisation quality. The Machame Route approaches from the southwest, traverses the spectacular southern face of the mountain, and delivers a sequence of landscapes — dense rainforest, open moorland, the extraordinary volcanic formations of the Shira Plateau, the dramatic Barranco Wall — that are among the most visually dramatic on the entire mountain.

The Route

The Machame Route enters the park at Machame Gate on the mountain’s southwestern flank, ascending through dense rainforest to Machame Camp at 2,835 metres on day one. Day two climbs through heath and moorland to Shira Camp at 3,750 metres on the edge of the ancient Shira Plateau — the remnant of a collapsed volcanic cone that predates Kibo and whose flat, open surface creates a landscape of haunting emptiness under clear skies. Day three crosses the plateau and descends into the Barranco Valley, an important acclimatisation feature of the route that takes climbers up to approximately 4,600 metres before dropping back to camp at 3,976 metres — the classic “climb high, sleep low” acclimatisation principle that makes Machame’s success rate significantly better than Marangu’s. Day four tackles the Barranco Wall — a steep, scrambling ascent up a rocky cliff face that is the most technically engaging section of the entire route and one of the most exhilarating — before continuing to Karanga Camp. Day five reaches Barafu Camp at 4,673 metres, the launch point for the summit push. Day six begins at midnight, reaching Uhuru Peak at dawn before a long descent to Mweka Camp and, the following day, to the gate.

The Experience

The Machame Route’s scenery is the finest available on any of the standard routes, and the traverse of the Barranco Wall on day four is a highlight that most Machame climbers cite as their single most memorable moment on the mountain — a steep, hands-and-feet scramble up a dramatic cliff face above the clouds, emerging onto open moorland with views across the southern ice fields that make the effort immediately worthwhile. The route’s popularity means that Machame Camp and Barafu Camp can be busy during peak season, with multiple operators’ groups sharing the camping areas, but the size of the mountain and the quality of the scenery absorb these numbers without significantly compromising the wilderness experience. The seven-day Machame itinerary — adding a rest day at Karanga — is the recommended option for climbers who prioritise summit success above all else.

Considerations

The Machame Route is a tented route — all accommodation is in camping tents carried and erected by the crew — which means that the comfort level is lower than Marangu but the flexibility and wilderness atmosphere are significantly higher. The route’s south-facing aspect means it receives more rainfall than the drier northern routes, and the forest section can be genuinely wet during the rain seasons. The Barranco Wall, while non-technical, requires a basic level of physical confidence and comfort with exposed scrambling — it is not suitable for climbers with a significant fear of heights. For the vast majority of reasonably fit, well-prepared climbers, however, Machame delivers the complete Kilimanjaro experience — great scenery, good acclimatisation, a challenging but achievable summit push, and the immense satisfaction of watching the sunrise from Uhuru Peak after a night of determined upward effort.
