The High Plateau Approach

Overview

The Shira Route is the highest-starting route on Kilimanjaro, approaching the mountain from the west via a track that is driveable to approximately 3,500 metres — allowing vehicles to reach the edge of the Shira Plateau before the walking begins. This high starting point is both the route’s defining characteristic and its primary limitation: beginning at altitude without the gradual ascent through the lower ecological zones means that the body has less time to acclimatise in the early stages of the climb, and the route’s acclimatisation profile is consequently less optimal than Lemosho, which covers similar terrain but begins lower. The Shira Route has largely been superseded by Lemosho as the preferred western approach, but it retains a small and loyal following among climbers who appreciate its high starting point and the time it saves on the lower mountain.

The Route

The Shira Route begins with a vehicle transfer to the Shira Ridge at approximately 3,500 metres, bypassing the forest zone entirely and beginning the walking on open moorland with immediate views of the Shira Plateau and the summit above. Day one walks to Shira Camp 1, day two to Shira Camp 2 at 3,840 metres, from which point the route joins Lemosho and follows the standard southern face itinerary — Lava Tower, Barranco, the Wall, Karanga, Barafu, summit, descent. The landscapes from Shira Camp 2 onward are identical to those of the Lemosho Route and equally spectacular.

The Experience

The Shira Route’s high starting point delivers immediate access to the open, dramatic landscapes of the plateau — the dense forest zone that occupies the first one or two days of other routes is bypassed entirely, and the climbing begins immediately in the open moorland with big sky views that set a tone of altitude and exposure from the very first steps. For climbers who have been to altitude recently and whose acclimatisation baseline is already established, this compressed lower mountain section is less problematic than for sea-level travellers starting fresh. The plateau itself, in good visibility, is one of the most beautiful landscapes on the mountain — a vast, flat, ancient volcanic surface with Kibo rising dramatically above and the plains of Tanzania spread out below.

Considerations

The Shira Route’s vehicle access to 3,500 metres means that the slow, walking-based acclimatisation of the lower forest zone is entirely absent — a genuine physiological disadvantage for most climbers that explains why Lemosho, which covers the same upper mountain terrain but adds two lower-altitude walking days, has largely replaced Shira as the route of choice for western approach climbers. The road to the Shira Ridge is also subject to seasonal condition issues and is not always passable for standard vehicles. For climbers who have recently been at altitude and want to minimise overall trip duration without sacrificing the spectacular western approach scenery, the Shira Route remains a valid option — for all others, Lemosho is the better choice.
