Ngaresero Cultural Forest
Hidden behind the upmarket lodges of Usa River, the Ngaresero forest protects a rare and precious remnant of riverine forest fed by natural springs that bubble up from the base of Mount Meru’s ancient lava flows. The water is so clean it is drunk straight from the source, and local guides demonstrate how different tree barks, roots, and leaves have been used for generations to treat malaria, wounds, digestive ailments, and eye infections. The walk is unhurried and meditative — birdsong fills the canopy, blue-headed agama lizards sun themselves on lava boulders, and the air is thick with the scent of wild ginger. It is less a tourist attraction and more an immersive introduction to the ecological and cultural knowledge that East African communities have cultivated over centuries.
