Meserani Snake Park & Maasai Museum
Positioned along the Great North Road towards the Serengeti, Meserani is a quirky but genuinely informative stop that combines the unlikely pairing of live reptiles and Maasai ethnography. The snake park houses East Africa’s largest live collection — from the enormous African rock python coiled massively in its enclosure to spitting cobras, black mambas, and a remarkable variety of chameleons — all clearly labelled with distribution maps and bite-risk information that is actually useful for anyone hiking in the bush. The adjoining Maasai museum, built and curated with community input, presents an unvarnished picture of pastoral life: cattle-brand irons, honey-wine calabashes, ceremonial swords and clubs, circumcision regalia, and detailed accounts of the age-group system that structures Maasai society from birth to elderhood. After the museum, a genuine Maasai boma across the road invites visitors for chai and conversation with families who live there year-round.
