Katavi sees a fraction of the visitors that pass through the northern circuit in a single week, which is precisely why its dry-season wildlife concentrations feel so extraordinary. As the Katuma River and surrounding floodplains shrink through the dry months, buffalo herds hundreds strong and dense congregations of hippo pack into the last remaining pools.
