Overview
At 4,566m, Mount Meru is Tanzania’s second-highest peak and one of Africa’s most dramatic volcanic cones, with a sheer ash cone and collapsed crater wall visible for most of the climb. The route starts inside Arusha National Park, so early stretches come with genuine wildlife โ giraffe, buffalo and colobus monkeys are common โ before the trail steepens toward the summit ridge.

Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut+
Trek through Arusha National Park, past giraffe and buffalo, from Momella Gate (1,500m) to Miriakamba Hut (2,514m).
Day 2Miriakamba to Saddle Hut+
Climb to Saddle Hut (3,570m), with a detour to Meru’s waterfalls along the way.
Day 3Summit Day & Descent to Miriakamba+
A pre-dawn ascent to the summit (4,566m) for sunrise, then descend all the way back to Miriakamba Hut.
Day 4Descent to Momella Gate+
Descend through the park to Momella Gate and transfer to Arusha.
