Overview
Marangu is Kilimanjaro’s oldest route and the only one offering hut accommodation the entire way, rather than camping โ a genuine advantage for trekkers who prefer a roof and a real bed each night. It approaches from the southeast in a straight, direct line, which makes it the most time-efficient standard route, though its faster ascent profile means the altitude is felt more acutely than on longer routes.

Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1Arrival & Briefing+
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport, transfer to your hotel and an equipment check with your guide.
Day 2Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut+
Trek through rainforest from Marangu Gate (1,860m) to Mandara Hut (2,700m).
Day 3Mandara to Horombo Hut+
Trek through moorland to Horombo Hut (3,720m), with views back over Kibo and Mawenzi peaks.
Day 4Horombo to Kibo Hut+
Cross the alpine desert saddle to Kibo Hut (4,703m), the final camp before the summit push.
Day 5Summit Day โ Uhuru Peak+
A midnight ascent via Gilman’s Point to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), then descend to Horombo Hut.
Day 6Descent to Marangu Gate+
Descend through the forest to Marangu Gate, receive your summit certificate, and transfer to your hotel.
