Overview
Machame approaches from the southwest and is widely considered Kilimanjaro’s most scenic classic route, climbing through rainforest, moorland and alpine desert before crossing the dramatic Barranco Wall. Its “climb high, sleep low” profile through the Lava Tower gives noticeably better acclimatisation than shorter routes, which is reflected in its strong summit success rate.

Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1Machame Gate to Machame Camp+
Trek through rainforest from Machame Gate (1,800m) to Machame Camp (3,000m).
Day 2Machame Camp to Shira Camp+
Climb onto the Shira Plateau to Shira Camp (3,840m), with clear views of Kibo.
Day 3Shira to Barranco via Lava Tower+
Climb to the Lava Tower (4,630m) for acclimatisation, then descend to Barranco Camp (3,960m).
Day 4Barranco to Barafu Camp+
Climb the Barranco Wall and cross the Karanga Valley to reach Barafu Camp (4,673m).
Day 5Summit Day โ Uhuru Peak+
A midnight ascent via Stella Point to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), then descend to Mweka Camp.
Day 6Descent to Mweka Gate+
Descend through the forest to Mweka Gate, receive your summit certificate, and transfer to your hotel.
