Mobile camping safaris reward light, sensible packing. Small aircraft and safari vehicles both have real weight and space limits, and a soft duffel bag packs into places a hard suitcase never will.
Clothing
- Neutral colours โ khaki, olive, sand, muted greens. Avoid bright colours, white and dark blue/black (the latter attracts tsetse flies in some areas).
- Lightweight long sleeves and trousers for sun and insect protection, plus a few short-sleeve options for hot afternoons.
- A warm layer โ fleece or light down jacket โ for early game drives and evenings, which get genuinely cold even close to the equator.
- A waterproof or windproof shell, particularly in the shoulder seasons.
- Comfortable closed walking shoes, plus sandals for camp in the evening.
Sun and insect protection
- High-SPF sunscreen and lip balm โ the equatorial sun is stronger than it feels.
- A wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses.
- DEET-based insect repellent, applied especially at dawn, dusk and in camp.
Health and documents
- Any prescription medication in its original packaging, plus a basic personal first-aid kit.
- Malaria prophylaxis, if prescribed by your travel clinic.
- Passport, visa confirmation, travel insurance details and yellow fever certificate if applicable โ keep copies separate from the originals.
Gear worth bringing
- Binoculars โ even a modest pair transforms distant sightings.
- A camera with a zoom lens, spare batteries and more memory cards than you think you need.
- A head torch for camp at night, when generators are often off.
- A dry bag or dust-proof case for electronics โ northern Tanzania’s roads are dry and dusty for most of the year.
- A reusable water bottle.
What to leave at home
Hard-sided suitcases (they don’t fit in safari vehicles or light aircraft holds), excessive luggage โ most camps request a soft bag under 15kg for fly-in itineraries โ and anything camouflage-patterned, which is restricted for civilian use in Tanzania.
If you’re combining your safari with Zanzibar or a trek, pack in layers you can subtract from rather than two entirely separate kits โ it keeps total luggage manageable across a multi-stop trip.
